that is when the car essentially after running away from police and speeding off from police crashed at this intersection. the shots that were fired they didn't hit anybody. no officers were injured here. the car sped off and got only a few blocks. police say they were not actively pursuing the car at the time of the crash. the car ran this red light here at franklin and eddy and hit a taxicab and the two men in the car got out and ran off. police ended up arresting one of them nearby but the second person is still on the loose this morning. san francisco police say think all began when officers tried to make a traffic stop for a light that was out on the license plate on the car. something very simple but it ended with this dangerous crash and the shooting and the sergeant we talked to says he feels lucky no officers were hurt. >> no one else was seriously hurt. the only injury i know of at this point is a hurt hand. given all things that could have gone wrong, i think this

is pretty good. >> reporter: so san francisco police still out here investigating this morning. one interesting thing you can see sort of how violent this crash was. we saw a police officer who was carrying off the top of a parking meter. it was sheered off as a result of this accident this morning. police believe they have arrested the passenger inside this car. they are still looking for the driver of the car and at this point it's unclear why they ran from police this morning. the only thing the sergeant could come up with because they had a gun inside the car. live this morning in san francisco alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. time now just 5:02. deadly shooting in oakland is under investigation. it happened at 106 and voltaire avenues. police found the body of the victim on the sidewalk. right now we don't know the man's name or possible motive for the shooting. oakland police investigating another shooting at 79th avenue and nae avenue.

there are very few details. the victim was rushed to the hospital. we have no word on his condition. starting today the jury will deliberate in the trial of an east bay woman accused of killing her former friend michelle le. prosecutors say giselle esteban bus a sociopath who killed le after tracking her for at least a month. esteban's attorney says her client acted in the heat of passion and should be guilty of involuntary manslaughter not murder. we have new information this morning about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. the associate the press is reporting the cia station chief in libya sent a cable to washington within 24 hours of last months attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. it was carried out by militants not a mob upset about an antimuslim movie. it's unclear if they saw anything. the obama administration maintained publicly for a week

schedule. because of that schedule change the traditional friday night bonfire rally won't be held in greek theater because it's already booked for a bob dillon concert. instead they will hold a rally at edwards' field. this mornings radar game may be blacked out. but they have given them a one- day extension to sell tickets. the roaders can declare a sellout if they sell 85% of their tickets. they will be playing the jag wires on sunday. oh by the way coming off a lost to the falcons the jaguars had a bye week. we have been telling you the san mateo bridge will be shut down. that will effect radar fans on the peninsula heading to sunday's game because they won't be able to take the bridge. tara moriarty is in hayward this morning with more on the work that is being done. tara. >> reporter: it will be shut down this weekend and next for a very big repair job and the detours start at 10:00 tonight.

here is what cal tran crews will be doing. they will be removing and replacing the bridge decks. there is also a cracked beam. part of an expansion joint that crews need to replace. it was discovered during a routine inspection. cal trans did emergency repairs on the bridge then. fixing it permanently will cost about $3 million. that is being paid for by toll funds. the bridge which spans about seven miles from foster city to hayward and carries up to 92,000 cars each day is supposed to reopen at 5:00 monday. during the closure we recommend that drivers use the dumbarton bridge, 237 to bypass the bay entirely, or head north to the bay bridge. live in hayward i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time now 5:06. we go from that to sal who has the latest on our commute so far. >> all right. that is right. we are looking pretty good, dave and pam. right now traffic is moving

along very nicely if you are driving across the bridges or if you're on the east shore freeway for example this traffic looks pretty good heading out to the mccarthur maze with no major problems. also the morning commute is looking nice here at the bay bridge toll plaza trying to get into san francisco as you just heard tara say the san mateo bridge will be closed. the bay bridge will be a little busier as people will have to get across the bay any way and they will use that bridge and the dumbarton. also the morning commute looks good on northbound 280 as you get up to highway 17. 5:06 let's go to steve. sal i'm watching the game last night they say coming up this weekend cal and stanford. i'm like really? this weekend? >> in october i know. we do have a big change here. yesterday temperatures warm. it was as warm at ocean beach at noon as it was in sacramento. just incredible. 82 verses 81. hopefully you got out to enjoy it because everything is crashing down. that was our final day of warm,

warm weather. fog is back, low clouds. it will be a much cooler pattern. starts today, takes us into the weekend. then the front gets a little closer. 50s and 60s. but mainly 60s. kind of a very mild air mass over us. a westerly breeze in place. it will ramp up later on. yesterday was north or northeast and it was very warm. today that is just the opposite. first system moved into the north. that has helped the fog come back in a big way. temperatures that were above average slide back to near average. a mix of fog and sun today and a westerly breeze. 70s and 80s. yesterday we had 90s. walnut creek 78. plateon 78. 68 instead of the 80s. a good 20-degree drop for many today. continue the cooling on saturday with an increase in

time now 5:11 more testimony today at the trial involving britney spears in los angeles. the lawyer for spears former manager claims britney spears was addicted to prescription drugs. she shaved her head to keep the courts from finding drug residue in her hair. he wants a big chunk of her fortune saying they had a deal that he would get 15% of her earnings as her manager. almost three years after that shooting rampage that killed 13 people at fort hood, texas a lot of those effected want the government now to declare it a terrorist attack. they want that designation so that wounded soldiers and relatives of the people killed will get the same benefits as those in a combat zone.

like eligibility for the purple heart. the number of harassment and discrimination complaints by congressional employees rose sharply over the past five years. that is according to a new report. the congressional office of compliance review shows 142 people claim discrimination, harassment, and hostile work environments in 2011. that compares to 52 in 2007. the report is designed to see if a law enacted in 1995 is having an effect. two new nation-wide polls show mitt romney is gaining in the presidential race. alison burns is in our washington, d.c. newsroom with the results and what happened when the candidates were back on the same stage last night. >> reporter: a gallop poll taken after the presidential debate on tuesday night shows

where the candidates are focused today during my next update. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. time now 5:14. investigators in castro valley believe an accelerant was used to start a house fire where a woman's body was found inside. authorities spent all day at this house on san carlos avenue. the fire started early thursday morning. though investigators say the fire is suspicious, they are not yet calling the woman's death a homicide. that house was owned by a retired san francisco firefighter who lives there with his girlfriend. but reportedly he is out of town. the man accused in pacifica's first homicide in 12 years is due to face a judge this afternoon for the first time. police arrested 24-year-old mark anthony furlon in connection with a death of 24- year-old keith coffee. the two got into a fight of some kind. police found coffee's body in front of a home an dell road wednesday morning. bay area rents are going

up. especially in san jose and san francisco. real facts which tracks apartment rents say rents have jumped 10.4% in the last year. that is a biggest increase in the country. now the average rent in san jose is now $1,980 san francisco rents are up more than 9%. starting today three bay area treat theaters will screen -- theaters will screen a documentary entirely of oakland highland hospital. it's called the waiting room. a film that explores how the public hospital struggles to care for thousands of largely uninsured patients. the movie has won awards at film festivals across the country. you can view the documentary at the undance movie in san francisco. it's pink out day at one oakland high school.

use alternate routes this weekend. and this mornings commute is looking pretty good on the dumbarton bridge and on the san mateo bridge nearby on the nimitz freeway. it's a nice looking drive. let's go to steve. sal, thank you opinion well st. louis cloudy and light rain moving through. very cool pattern. it looks like it will be cloudy and light rain. more clouds and cool. upper 40s i should say and low 50s. so we'll keep an eye on things. it does look like a cloudy and chilly pattern. see if the giants can stave off elimination here. for us first system of what looks to be many is beginning to work its way into the pacific northwest and extreme northern california. you can see the fog coming up the coast. so the final day of warm weather was yesterday. thursday. when it was very warm. coast bay and inland. we had a record high. and also out to fresno which was 95. it will be much cooler starting today and into the weekend. more low clouds for us today today and tomorrow. then increasing clouds as we head toward sunday. 50s mainly a lot of 60s here.

still a mild air mass. the westerly breeze or south westerly breeze is in place compared to that easterly breeze yesterday. so today temperatures start to come down. they will continue that theme. in fact we will see 60s and 70s now. it will be a lot more 70s temperatures drop a good 10-20 degrees from yesterday. especially by the coast. 79 san jose. 74 santa cruz. 60s now instead of the 80s for areas like daily city and west lake and san bruno. and pacifica. redwood city and san carlos at 70. cooler on saturday. then comes the increasing clouds on sunday. cloudy on monday. and it looks like it will carry into tuesday. all the major european markets are lower this morning as the summit of the european union leaders continues for a second day. markets in the far east were mixed at the close. japan and hong kong finished with small gains. checking in on our numbers. not a big down yesterday.

5:23. terrifying moments look at this. a store clerk in portland maine is running from her life from a suspected gunman. still not clear if the man was trying to rob the store or if he had other motive. look at her. the clerk was able to escape.

police are now searching for that suspect. police also searching for a man that robbed a bank in alameda at gunpoint. the robbery reported at the city bank on webster street at 10:00 yesterday morning. the gunman pulled out the gun, then escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and other items from that bank. he's described as a man in his 20s. about 5'8" waking 280 pounds -- weighing 230 pounds. one bay area teenager is fighting for the right to earn his eagle scout after getting kicked out of the boy scouts because he is gay. ryan is not taking no for an answer. his mother launched an online petition demanding ryan become an eagle scout after completing the requirements for scoutings top honors. yesterday they delivered the petitions armed with more than 400,000 signatures to the officials of the local boy scout council. >> the support i'm getting is

nothing like i have ever had before. 400,000 signatures is just like not even dreamable. >> the boycotts say ryan quote does not meet scouting membership standard on sexual orientation. san francisco's board of supervisors is expected to approve a law that would give you the public more information about bedbugs. now if it passes, pest control companies would be required to provide monthly reports on where they found bedbugs. it would also require landlords to give tenants a two year record about bedbug reports. bedbugs can cause redness, itching, and swelling when they bite you. it is the end of a journalisticker rash. starting next year you will only be able to read news week magazine online. they will stop printing the magazine at the end of this year. it has been hard hit by dropping sales and print advertisement environment.

welcome back. this is our ktvu channel 2 morning news it's a friday october 19th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. time is just about 5:30. steve paulson is here with the forecast. it was windy yesterday. definitely cooler today. >> we had two different wind directions yesterday. one was east and later west. we've gone from very warm record highs yesterday. low clouds are back. temperatures by the coast will drop a good 20 degrees and the system move into the north is the first what looks to be many that will give us a big cooling trend and rain next week. 60s and 70s today or a few low 80s. southbound 101 looks pretty good. no problems. but it's a little foggy near the golden gate bridge. also we are looking at westbound 24 between walnut creek and oakland and that is a nice looking drive. let's go back to the desk. breaking news still coming in. shots were fired at san francisco police officers just hours ago during a routine stop right now a search is still going on for a person who fired those shots.

ktvu alex savidge has been at the scene since 4:30. a lot happened in there. bring us up to date. >> this was supposed to be a routine traffic stop but it ended with gunfire. this was the driver of a car who refused to pull over for san francisco police and then someone inside that car fired shots in the direction of officers. none of the officers were hit. after that shooting the car sped off and it ended with an accident. there was an accident here at this intersection that is just a few blocks away. the car crashed here. we'll show wow video from this morning. police say at the time they were not actively pursuing the car when it crashed. the car ran a red light at eddy and franklin and hit by a taxicab. luckily that cab driver only had minor injuries. the two men inside that consider got out and they ran off. police were able to arrest the passenger nearby but they are still searching for the driver this morning. san francisco police sergeant tells us this began after they tried to make a traffic stop

for a light that was out on the license plate of this car. >> with any traffic stop, you don't know what you're walking up on. and this is a perfect case and example. they could have easily stopped the car, walked up on the driver and produced the gun and shot. i guess what happened to me was probably a better case scenario. you know. but the fact that you don't know what they're coming up on. >> you can get on idea of the force of this crash when you see this san francisco police officer who is carrying the top of a parking meter that was sheered off by the speeding car as it spun out of control this morning. so far police have not released the identities of the two men inside that car. it's unclear why they refuse to pull over. the sergeant here on scene says it's possible it could have been because they had a gun inside the car. this morning police have the passenger of that car in custody but again they are still searching for the driver. live this morning in san francisco alex savidge ktvu

channel 2 news. a man who's been described as the instigator will be sentenced in court today. 22-year-old manual ortega is set to get a 32 year prison sentence as part of a plea deal. he and five other men are charged with gang raping a 16- year-old girl outside of a richmond high school home coming dance in 2009. a former hercules teacher who was killed inside her home will be laid to rest today. funeral services for susie ko will be held today. she was stabbed on october 5th. a husband and wife are accused in the crime spree. we are outraged. >> we are outraged. >> the media has exposed what

we have known all along. >> union workers shut down that port mission. they are accusing the port of trying to cut their salaries and health care while the director james quan allegedly spent thousands of dollars of port money at a strip club at a massage parlor on liquor purchases, golf outings and a barbershop. ktvu report revealed some of quan's expenses. >> when you heard about the expenditures on mr. quan what was your reaction? >> i was disappointed because it gives the port a black eye and now that doesn't feel good. >> sources are now telling us the board voted anonymously behind closed doors to put omar benjamin on paid administrative leave while they investigate the whole spending issue. the acting director is expected to deal with james quan's job status following an investigation which may take several weeks.

alameda county is a step closer to having a new tool to fight crime. it's coming with a lot of controversy. coming up we'll let you know what the sheriffs department is planning to buy and why some say this could be used to invade your privacy. happening now dozens of people are camping out at san jose state. they are hoping to send a strong message to voters. ann rubin is in san jose with more on how their message could impact you and your family. >> reporter: this group has been camped out all night. ballot measure d actually originated here on the san jose state campus with a push from a sociology class. $8 the current minimum wage is not enough to live on in silicon valley and thinks it should be raised to $10 an hour. not everyone agrees. oakland a's owner came out against the measure and so have

some local business owners. the extra costs could force some mom and pop shops to fold. proponents of the measure say there is no evidence tosspot that. and in fact, they say in places like san francisco where the minimum wage has been raised, people have kept their jobs and actually stayed in them longer. they say things need to change in san jose too. >> that is our message. reasonable pay. $8 is not enough because $8 does not pay for the basics here. our basic philosophy is if you work hard, play by the rules, you should make a decent fair wage. >> reporter: now the camp is actually part of the seventh annual poverty under the stars event on campus. students have just chosen to focus on the minimum wage issue this year. live in san jose ann rubin. time now 5:36. firefighters are battling a 300- acre wild fire in lake county. it's near clearlake. this one broke out near highway

29. their crews have been able to prevent that fire from moving forward. but there is still mandatory evacuations in effect for the mercy springs area. the fire is 25% contained. well now it's game five of the national league championship series. tonight is a must win for the giants if they want a chance to go back to the world series. >> up the middle that is a base hit. >> st. louis cardinals first on the board in game four last night with tim lincecum on the mound for the giants. the giants did get offense from hunt pence and pablo sandoval that both hit home runs. the cardinals won the game 8-3. giants fans say they still have hope. >> we've got to take it home. i've got tickets for sunday and monday and i want to be there. >> berry zito will take the mound for the giants tonight.

the trend is to take the temperatures down even more so as we head into the weekend. yesterday was the last of the warm weather. at least for now. highs maybe in the low 60s. big changes on the way. 50s and 60s. very mild air mass over us. most locations around 61-62 or 63. we do have a westerly breeze in place. everything has returned in the form of fog. it will be a cooler pattern today. the biggest drop will be those for coast and bay. high temps near normal to going below pretty fast. 60s and 70s and 80s. sonoma is in there. walnut creek and concord. 72 berkeley. 68 alameda. 82 morgan hill to 78 saratoga. cupertino 79. same for redwood city. palo alto 76.

here's a quick look at somes of the top stories we have been following for you right now at 5:43. shots were fire at san francisco police officers just hours ago during a traffic stop. no officers were hit. but the suspects then crashed into a taxicab when they tried to escape. now the police captured one of the suspects but the other one got away and still on the loose. the san mateo bridge will be closed for the weekend starting tonight. it's the first of two weekend closures for a seismic upgrade. the bridge is expected to reopen by 5:00 a.m. on monday. and president obama and mitt romney back on the campaign trail today after appearing together last night at a charity din never new york. president obama has a campaign event in virginia. mitt romney he will be in florida. pakistani soldiers have detained a man accused of shooting a 14-year-old girl. authorities say they are still searching for the man that shot

malala and wounded two other girls on a school bus. the suspect is a member of the pakistani taliban. security forces detained his brother-in-law, uncle, and a brother that is a tactic used by police to force a suspect to surrender. a san diego man arrested on child pornography charges may be connected to the terrorist plot to blow up the federal reserve bank in new york. howie carter ii appeared in federal court yesterday. he was arrested after the fbi found 1,000 images of child pornography on a computer that was traced back to him. court records indicate carter has connections to a 21-year- old man who was arrested in new york on wednesday after an fbi sting operation. time now 5:45. the cia wants the white house to approve the purchase of several more armed drones. this proposal by the cia would boost the number of drone strikes the cia could carry out in pakistan and yemen. it would also allow them to use

drones on emerging al qaeda threats. if approved the cia could add as many as ten drones to its fleet which has about 35. alameda county is a sell close i -- is a steppiester to having a new tool. they want to buy an unmanned surveillance drone. this is getting a lot of credit criticism. controversy for the boy scouts. nearly two dozen former bay area volunteers were named in perversion files released by a judge yesterday.
